Southern Fratting

A look into the frattier side of life.

Featured Store: Hardwick’s

Hidden on the outskirts of downtown Cleveland, Hardwick’s brings back memories of a time when downtown was the central shopping center. The quaint store featured a limited selection, but what was available was quite a treat. The store appeared to deal mainly in a catalog business, but did have a collection of items in stock.

What initially drew me into the store was a wonderful nautical themed club belt by Cambridge that looks a lot like this one:

Expecting the belt to be at least $30, I was shocked to find the $8 price tag once I went into the store.

Venturing further into the store, we were greeted by the sales staff, and the owners of the quilting shop, which shares space with the clothing store. The ladies showed us the sale merchandise (a lot of Polo Jeans Co) and some beautiful ties made by Chattanooga company Wilson & Bow. It was hard to pass up on a traditional blue & red regimental stripe after learning the store was only charging $25 for the all silk tie.

The store also carried an assortment of Royal Highnies, while a little too high for my budget seemed to be the nicest boxers I had ever come into contact with.

Founded in 1915, the store is located at 80 Church Street Northeast, Cleveland, TN. Their website can be found at HardwickStore.com. I definitely recommend stopping by if you’re looking for something unique to add to your fratty wardrobe. They’re also very open to suggestions and would appreciate any feedback that you might have.

Featured Store: The Town Squire

During a spree of last minute Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve down in Cleveland, TN (Near Chattanooga), my family decided to run into The Town Squire. The store is located away from the normal shopping district in Cleveland, but still on the beaten path.

The store carries a wide selection (wider than the two Nashville stores) of fratty staple Southern Tide and is also the only purveyor of Polo in Bradley County. Town Squire also carries an assortment of Cutter & Buck, Barbour?, and collegiate apparel (including the UT orange blazer). The service was excellent, the salesperson immediately attended to our needs and helped pick out several extra long ties for my uncle and helped me to pick which Southern Tide shirt to get. The salesperson also informed us that he would be receiving more shirts in the early spring.

The experience was made even better by a 20% off sale (50% off the ties) and free gift wrapping!

In case you were wondering, I decided on Leaf Green:

Volunteer Traditions expands beyond the Volunteer State…

Posted on | November 6, 2009 | No Comments

ProductMissBelt2…to become Traditional State.

The incredibly successful lifestyle brand based on the iconic tri-star design has expanded to include Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, and Georgia, all states known for their incredible frattiness.

The idea behind Traditional State evolved from a conversation between friends tailgating on the banks of the Tennessee River. In the Spring of 2006, the conversation became more than a dream when we founded a company with the philosophy of making quality products that celebrate the pride and the traditions of the state of Tennessee! Since then we’ve heard requests from Alabama to Alaska to make products featuring more states. With that in mind Traditional State is proud to bring you a line of products featuring Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia & Texas.

Outside of Tennessee & Texas, the line is currently limited to belts and dog collars, but you can be sure that more items will be added in the near future.

An interesting article in the NY Times

I read an interesting article in the New York Times today, linked to me by Miss Meredith Whitfield of Knoxville.

I remembered all the stylish Southern drunks I knew in college. If you went to school anywhere below Baltimore, then you knew them, too: boozy boys with legacy names like Chelsen and Toleridge who wore sloppy oxfords and crooked bow ties.

You can read the article here.
